A #platform, is a platform, is a platform. The user don't care.
What is that, a #CSR on #serverless, an #SSR hooked up to a #VPS - or maybe you even manage your own #kubernetes. Daring, aren't we?
For some people, this is all static. But, they know what the #web is. They know that it's where the crawlers live.
When I look at this chart, I think #WebSocial has a ring to it that might project "Other" into the top 5 - maybe even top 3.
Why?
In the past three days, I've switched my #homelab to a new #ReverseProxy! After using #NginxProxyManager and #Zoraxy, I've now moved to #Pangolin.
Pangolin allows me to provide my #selfhosted services from my home lab without needing to open a port in my #firewall.
Essentially, it's a self-hosted alternative to #CloudflareTunnels, running on a #VPS. Due to the current political situation in the #USA, I preferred not to use Cloudflare.
Pangolin is based on #WireGuard and #Newt, enabling a #certificate-based direct connection after installing a client on the home server.
I'm extremely satisfied with it and now have no open ports in my private #network!
Tunneled Mesh Reverse Proxy Server with Identity and…
GitHubIn the end, no, your #closetserver or #VPS is not enough. Your #managedhosting solution is not enough. The world runs on #cloud infra and that's not what's bad.
What's bad is how it's been implemented, how it's a threat to #privacy, how it's a threat to #DigitalSovreignty, as well as #wellfare AND #freemarket - at the same time!
So what do you do? Throw the baby out with the bathwater, or do you question the actual hardware infra, as well as the legal industrial precedents set?
Creating several friendica instances as domains and/or subdomains on one VPS with one IP

tupambae.orgOm man skall sätta upp en #VPS server för #selfhosting, vilken leverantör skall man välja idag för att köra några webbplatser på?
Önskemål:
* Debian Linux
* Svensk hostad (eller i alla fall EU)
* Kunna köra docker
this is what tech empowerment looks like
my year in tech (Feb 2025 edition):
- Jun 2024: started the blog #TheFutureIsFederated
- Jul: started interoperability tests
- Aug: federated my #Wordpress site & joined #Friendica #Lemmy #Mbin and #PieFed
- Sep: federated 2 more sites
- Oct: joined #Sharkey
- Dec: got a #VPS, installed #YunoHost and started self-hosting via #GoToSocial
- Jan 2025: set up my own #Pixelfed and #Friendica instances
- Feb: migrating to my self-hosted #GhostIO blog
#activitypub platforms serves as pretty powerful groupware as well.
If you have say a #VPN accessible #LAN inside a #VPS or the #cloud and you've got control over name resolution and certificate authorities, you can use #Mastodon, #Matrix, #PeerTube, etc as an internal organizational tool.
It might be seen as overkill, but if you want to use ActivityPub as an internal messaging and communication method, you can pretty much set up whatever platform suits your need.
What's your preferred VPS (Virtual Private Server)…

no fucking clue.
I'm using misskey, outta the box. It's got almost no English-language documentation. Takes a little bit of brainpower (and practice) just to run the bash installer.
#Misskey is a #Node #Typescript application, running on port 3000, and uses #postgresql and #redis for data backend. I'm assuming that the redis does fast cacheing of some sort, not sure what all is there. Also has #nginx set up as a #reverseproxy on port 80, even though the the documentation tells us to expose port 3000 to the world.
That's what I did. I'm assuming that most federation would still work even with port 3000 closed, but it's not worth taking the chance.
The entire application is very fast running and very snazzy looking when it's running all on one box with a good deal of hardware available.
I know that misskey works, and it's a good program, but I want it to be slightly budget-optimized and somewhat containerized so that I can tinker with other containerized applications with the #VPS I already have running.
The rebellion will be federated & self-hosted
On Dec 5, 2024 I published this blog post https://elenarossini.com/2024/11/the-rebellion-will-be-federated/ on @ele@elenarossini.com
On Dec 17 I signed up for a #VPS.
On Dec 22 I installed #GoToSocial and began personalizing my little corner of the #Fediverse: @elena
On Jan 14 I installed #Pixelfed on my server: @ele@photos.elenarossini.com
Yesterday I installed #LinkStack on https://elena.social
All this feels really empowering and I wanna help others do the same!
This is how I plan to rebel against the tech barons…

I'm hosting my own code on my #VPS servers.
Open-source web server control panel.
hestiacp.comCelebrating the new year by starting on building out a bootstrap web app codebase from scratch. Just #helloWorld nonsense that supports login, logout, notifications, swipeable galleries and timelines, etc.
I'm abandoning my #openTofu #AI project for the time being, because the stupid cloud provider doesn't support launching cloud GPU via webservice, even though they have cloud #GPU, and even though they have a web API that can launch #VPS and other services.
Good morning Fedi friends!
The next chapter of my self-hosting journey is all about beefing up #security of my #VPS.
Do I have any idea of what I'm doing? Not really, no. But thankfully many of you here shared some brilliant tips (special thanks to @mkj and @st3fan)
Now, it's NOT very reassuring that #YunoHost's security page (recommended by St3fan) says:
"WARNING: Following these instructions requires advanced knowledge of system administration."
Wish me luck!
Good morning from Italy!
Taking advantage of the fact my parents are giving breakfast to my 3-year-old to do more #YunoHost tweaking.
I just ran the diagnostics and my jaw is ON THE FLOOR. I see GREEN ALL OVER - including "Email" (my nemesis) !!!
Wishing you all a lovely weekend!
Update: yes, it was SO EASY a child (or a #Linux newbie) could do it.
I now have #YunoHost installed on my #VPS!
I wish I had timed how long it took - it was less than 5 minutes! This update comes 2 hours later because I've been dealing with other work stuff in the meantime.
All this to say: a HUGE thank you to the @yunohost team for creating such a phenomenal resource. Donation-as-thank-you coming soon
