Many people express their astonishment with the #Transnistria refusal to allow humanitarian help from #Moldova in the face of stopped gas supplies from #Russia.

Here’s the thing - there is no such thing as the 'Transnistrian authorities' as we understand the term.

There is a quasi-mafia corporation Sherif, which has been Moscow's governor in this speck of land since 1990. They don't make decisions in the interests of the local people, they’re there to secure Moscow's interests.

Moscow's current interest is that it does not have the resources to look after its 'geopolitical black holes' such as Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Transnistria, so it expects them to 'cope' and somehow 'wait it out' without complaining too much or spoiling Moscow's image in the region.

Something like Medvedev's famous "there’s no money, but you hold on" in Crimea in 2016. Moscow has bigger problems elsewhere and is counting on them to actually 'wait it out'.

A thin strip of land on the #Dniester River with #Ukraine on the other side, dominated by old #SovietUnion military depots, it has remained in limbo since the early 1990s, unrecognized by most of the world, a forgotten backwater, similar to #Kaliningrad, as an outpost of #Russian #imperialism and #colonialism
