Here's an #XKCD type question to the #chemistry and theoretical/weather #physics bubble, after I saw a possibly rather hyped article on H2 extraction from deep rock ("more than 170,000 years of energy!":
The beauty in electrolysis lies in it being a circular technology. But H2 from rock will *add* H2 to the atmosphere and *bind* previously free O2. How much wetter would the atmosphere get and how would this impact rain and sea levels if we burned all of this new H2 from the depths? 🤔🧐

Happy birthday to #astrophysicist Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), a trailblazer for women in #astronomy who discovered that hydrogen & helium are the most common elements in the universe.

Born England, she won a scholarship to Newnham College at Cambridge in 1919 where she heard a lecture which changed her life. She wrote, “My world had been so shaken that I experienced something very like a nervous breakdown.”🧵

Scientists have obtained the first image of a black hole in 2019, using Event Horizon Telescope observations of the center of the galaxy M87. The image shows a bright ring formed as light bends in the intense gravity around a black hole that is 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun.

Black holes, black holes… nature’s cosmic vacuum cleaners, sucking in stars, secrets, and probably your missing socks. They bend space, time, and your will to resist googling “spaghettification.” What’s "inside"? No one knows. Maybe a party. BYO gravity. We celebrate the unknown this #BlackHoleWeek!

My electron gun comes with a countdown timer, I think it's preparing the emission filament for use. #physics #accelerators
(Side note: I don't know wtf I am doing, never turned one of these on before, just following the manual and pressing buttons.)

It's almost time to go on Friday but I can attach these thick cables. Grey is 32 channels of +/-150V, black is up to 2kV for the electron gun. #physics #accelerators

#Vector #calculus in #Physics is actually a special case of multivariate analysis in #Statistics. A vector v of x is a measure of x's deviation from the origin, that is v = x - 0 with a direction. In statistics we look at x's deviation from its own mean instead, i.e. x - x^bar where x^bar is the mean of x. In vector calculus the dot product u dot v is really just the covariance of x and y assuming x^bar and y^bar are zero. #math #mathematics

#OTD in 1914.

The Franck–Hertz experiment, the first electrical measurement to clearly demonstrate the quantum nature of atoms, was presented to the German Physical Society.

Their experimental results proved to be consistent with the Bohr model for atoms that had been proposed the previous year by Niels Bohr.

Bifurcating Waterways

Your typical river has a single water basin and drains along a river or two on its way to the sea. But there are a handful of rivers and lakes that don’t obey our usual expectations. Some rivers flow in two directions. Some lakes have multiple outlets, each to a separate water basin. That means that water from a single lake can wind up in two entirely different bodies of water.

The most famous example of these odd waterways is South America’s Casiquiare River, seen running north to south in the image above. This navigable river connects the Orinoco River (flowing east to west in this image) with the Rio Negro (not pictured). Since the Rio Negro eventually joins the Amazon, the Casiquiare River’s meandering, nearly-flat course connects the continent’s two largest basins: the Orinoco and the Amazon.

For more strange waterways across the Americas, check out this review paper, which describes a total of 9 such hydrological head-scratchers. (Image credit: Coordenação-Geral de Observação da Terra/INPE; research credit: R. Sowby and A. Siegel; via Eos)

Can higher order tensors be represented by a matrix? People think you cannot, but I say you can. A 3x3x3 #tensor can be represented by a 3x9 matrix easily. Here is how.

In fact a 9x9 matrix is symmetric and has much better properties than a 3x3x9 tensor. And we can always represent any tensor of any order using a matrix. Tensor and matrix are nothing more than two different "accounting" systems of keeping a record of a data set containing many variables. #mathematics #physics #AI

My #first contribution as a #new person here.

I’m a #dancer and lost instagram to the right wing, as well as Facebook and stuff. I’m politically left. Change my mind.

I‘m from #munich seeking #community. I like #politics, #dance, #physics, #it ( a lot ) and some good joints. I’m honest, playful and kinda funny.

Let’s see if I can find some likeminded persons :)
