The media has reported claims of wealth exodus from the UK using 'research' from New World Wealth; but, it now turns out that the data looks to have been manipulated, or even made up - the firm's sole employee says there's 'just a lack of information around & we’ve tried to fill the gap as best we could' on wealthy people's migration(s).

Whatever we might think about the rich, the idea they're upping sticks & leaving the UK in droves looks to be, at least, unproven!

UK business secretary Jonathan Reynolds says when he hears suggestions of a wealth tax:

'There’s a lot of populism about this & I’m frustrated to see it... I see colleagues sometimes say this in parliament & I say ‘Come on, get serious, get serious’.”

He means you cannot be serious about a wealth tax, but I say;

yes lets get serious; lets tax wealth & not treat it as too practically or politically difficult - to think so only reveals to whom you've been listening!

Once again the UBS annual wealth report confirms what we all know/suspect; the rich are getting richer; the ultra rich are capturing more & more wealth for themselves....

While there is much that is sensible in the Guardian editorial (below), really this is hardly news; critical political economists have been warning of all this for decades.... perhaps its the (more recent) impact on the middle class that has focussed journalists' minds?

Research from the Women's Budget Group shows:

Wealth inequality is much higher than income inequality & is deeply gendered.

The average wealth held by men is £378,079, compared to £300,017 for women.

The gender wealth gap (21%) exceeds the gender pay gap (13%).

Women’s wealth is more likely to be held in property & physical assets, often shared with household members, while men’s wealth is more commonly in individually owned private pensions.
