I don't understand people who say the economy is going to collapse and the dollar will be worthless - so invest in precious metals. It doesn't make sense. You're trading one currency for another. Neither of which can become food, ammunition, water, shelter, fire, et cetera.

In the event of an economic collapse, I believe the best resources for bartering will be those that are highly sought after and necessary for life. Shelter, food, water, ammunition, firearms, sugar, salt. I feel like those who say one should invest in precious metals are deliberately ignoring the fact that there's a chance there will be no financial backbone to support such trade. So, what you have your 50 ounces of gold. I've got ten gallons of water. Your gold means nothing to me.

@matty You'll not only have to hide it to make sure people don't kill you to steal it and you also have to consider that the government will seize it if you have any. That is why it's not the best to have.
