Trying my hand at making a javascript browser game. I don't actually know javascript so ai is doing a lot of work here lol.
I'm thinking I'll get chess set up so you can play normally and not play illegal moves, then set up a system where you can alter the rules of how pieces can move and wacky shit
got all the pieces working. en passant is a bitch but it is the most important move in chess
the undo move button now works
now it's a full undo redo system with the whole game history
castling now works. i'm not implementing check. if you lose your king another random piece of yours will become a king.
OK so when you take the king, the opponents next closest piece now gets turned into a king.
Ok I've got the card system working. You can have a max of 9 cards. You click them to play them and they all do something to alter the board state. They have a tool tip explaining what they do as well. Cards include: summon passed pawn, undo opponents previous turn, transform a random piece of your enemies into a king (permanent liability), steal a card, play all other cards, destroy a card
I've got a bunch more card ideas some of which will be extremely overpowered so I'll have to make them rare. I'm open to suggestions.

@Ghislaine Have a card that refreshes a pawn's ability to advance 2 spaces. En passant still applies. A card to allow restore castling even after a king/rook has moved. Maybe I'll think up some more.

@RegalBeagle I allow infinite castling also through check by default. But yeah maybe a card that reloads all your pawns for a double jump would be funny. Idk how to make a card apply to any specified piece so it’s either all of them or a random one.
@Ghislaine @RegalBeagle any piece can move like a king for one turn (very useful for bishops and knights)
pawns promote 1 row before the end
bishops can slide along the edge of the board (pic related: the bishop can slide along the edge of the board and take the rooks (provided no pieces are in the way))
pawns can attack diagonally backwards
when your rooks or queen are taken the piece which takes them is also taken
your king can move 2 spaces and jump over pieces

@billiam @RegalBeagle Upgraded versions of pieces is on the to do list. I can just change out the sprite and have different rules for determining legal moves
