1. Without outside interference, their strategy would have been necessarily the strategy of the under-dog, to retreat and use guerrilla tactics which would have worn down Russia over time. Instead Ukraine used a bad strategy of fighting over every inch of territory - which really put Russia in their strongest position.
2. By putting targeted sanctions on Russian Oligarchs, the US made sure nobody could really try to undermine Putin from within Russia. Individually targeted sanctions are something that will probably never be relaxed until the war is completely over, so there's no good reason for any of the sanctioned people to do anything except align under Putin - the sanctions "bound them all together".

From fighting ineffectively in Ukraine to destroying their economies and importing violent migrants to garner the hatred of their citizens, western governments SEEM to be playing along with Putin's plan. Probably because this plan will re-invigorate their own countries as well.

I think a big reason why the West is not stopping him is because the Catholic Church has significant power over western governments, but only by conspiracy - and what they'd like is for everyone to become formally Catholic so that the Church can once again stand out in the open and act as a government. This process of delegitimizing and then purging the Godless governments from The West has the benefit for them of revitalizing a Catholic empire - so the world will be split between Catholic in the west and Orthodox in the east. The big loser here is China, because they honestly accepted Communism, which Russia only did until the point when Lenin died - after that they became an Orthodox country in a Communist skinsuit.
So everybody is out to screw China, and China really has no counter-measure for this, they're in the worst geopolitical position. They have no resources, no oil, they even have to import food.
