The country that destroyed Afghanistan was the Soviet Union who overthrew their king in 1973 (twice, again in 1978 in an open communist revolution). Later, the US started giving weapons and fomenting an open war to fuck with the soviet union regime there.
The resulting chaos of course causes the Taliban to come up as the strong party representing the indigenous islamic population to deal with crime and the CIA opium trade. Then the CIA occupies them for 20 years to enforce it.
