Russia is already working hard on clearing a path through the artic, the Northern Sea Route with the nuclear powered icebreakers.
It doesn't go through Greenland at all.
It's nothing but a navy base so the US can be pirates and board Russian ships. Very similar to how the British used Port Royal in the Caribbean.
Owning it outright isn't going to make any real functional difference unless there's any record of America requesting a higher military buildup and Greenland saying no
