Brazil is so far ahead in crime that when others try to copy it, we have already integrated it into daily society and don't even bat an eye.

It's a great country to visit and as a tourist, it's pretty awesome.
It's complicated though if you want to live there and worse if you're on local salaries.
Crime is a concern but in daily life it's not bad at all. Street crime is limited to the big cities, it can be almost as safe as small-town America when you're well away from Rio and Sao Paulo, for example. Scams are a big issue though.
I recommend always having a guide or companion if you don't speak Portuguese.

Brazil is one of those main countries to which I've never been... some of it is because of the reciprocal high visa price for 'Muricans to visit. I do plan to go some day... but yeah, the crime is a concern. So goes travel...
