Urea (NH₂)₂CO is made directly by processing large amounts of natural gas, methane CH4 and nitrogen N2 from the air. It is the major ingredient for nitrogen fertilizers. The Gulf states are major producers of urea, as they have huge amounts of cheap methane. Without these fertilizers, crop yields in India will likely drop by a third, or half, which could lead to famine. Famines usually have some political or economic dimension, and conditions are different now than in previous famine times, but it would still be bad.
