>When an immune disease causes the stomach to "eat itself," the condition is almost always Autoimmune Gastritis (AIG). In this chronic disorder, the immune system mistakes the stomach's healthy cells for foreign invaders and destroys them.
AIG primarily targets the parietal cells in the upper part of the stomach, which are responsible for producing stomach acid and a protein necessary for absorbing vitamin B₁₂. As these cells are destroyed, several complications and symptoms arise:Low Acid & Malabsorption: The lack of stomach acid prevents the body from properly absorbing essential nutrients like iron, calcium, and vitamin B₁₂.Anemia: A deficiency in vitamin B₁₂ frequently leads to pernicious anemia, while poor iron absorption causes chronic low ferritin levels.
Hidden Symptoms: Early on, the disease can be entirely silent. As it progresses, it often causes non-specific issues like bloating, heartburn, abdominal discomfort, and unexplained fatigue.
Long-Term Risks: Chronic inflammation of the stomach lining elevates the long-term risk of developing gastric cancers or neuroendocrine tumors.
While AIG is widely considered an incurable, chronic condition, standard medical care focuses heavily on managing its effects.
