The Greek form most often cited is: Αν πεθάνεις πριν πεθάνεις, δεν θα πεθάνεις όταν πεθάνεις (“If you die before you die, you will not die when you die.”) It appears as wall inscriptions in cells and monasteries on Mount Athos (commonly mentioned at St. Paul’s Monastery and also noted at Stavrovouni). It expresses the classic monastic theme of remembrance of death and dying to the passions/the world now, so that physical death becomes passage into life rather than spiritual death.
