i don't do rust and never will, but isn't the borrow checker just a manual garbage collector? you create a variable and when the function scope ends, it gets freed from memory. if someone borrowed it, its reference counter is increased and in rust only one owner can exist at a time so it can be only 0 or 1. if it is already owned by someone, it will throw error if you want to borrow it. and that is about it. am i right?
