But I'll get over it.

For 5 years I worked p/t case management and clinical social work with the exact people I've had free lunches with for the past THREE months. I thought, what the hell... I EARN a free lunch, maybe help some people for free.

It took only 3 months to realize even LESS of these people deserve or WANT help at all then the people who actually landed at a halfway house. And of the fraction who do, half of them are incapable of hearing common sense or taking action on what they understand they have to do to improve their lives; at least get a roof and a shower and a bed.

So I guess I've changed my mind about assistance to the homeless.

@roxygellar The golden rule is incomplete. Marcus Aurelius patched it a while back: Treat others as they deserve to be treated.

Exactly. There are exceptions to the rule in my experiences over the last 90 days. But the vast majority are truly lost in one way or another. I lived out of my car and was even without that for a short time. But my experience and choice to find a way into housing was extremely different from the norm in regards to why I was out there. I call it my Jack Kerouac Period.
