@Polfusilier The device in the bottom right is a mercury arc rectifier. It's used to convert high voltage AC to DC to power large electric motors. They have almost entirely been replaced by semiconductors/MOSFETs these days.
@Diogenese_Shiplap Gas arc rectifiers are beautiful pieces of heavy industry and are mesmerizing to watch operate. It may be a rabbit hole you'd be interested in.
