GPU ram has not increased because Nvidia and AMD has segmented the market, only "professional" cards have the full amount of memory, while consumer cards have way less, so that you cant use consumer cards for large AI models or 3d modeling. F.ex the professional version of 5090 comes with 96 Gigabyte of ram, versus 32 on the consumer version, and costs 6x as much.
In comparision, the professional version of the 1080ti had 12 gigabyte of ram, compared to 11 on the Ti. The pro version of the following model, the 2080, had 48 gigabyte of ram while the consumer version was stuck on 12 gigabyte.
This artificial market segmentation improves profit and is possible because Nvidia and AMD has an informal duopoly. Gfx card manufacturers will be denied GPU circuits if they make consumer boards that come with maxed ram load. The antitrust acts of the US congress 120 years ago are completely gone.
