I looked it up, they were kicked out for "violating the olympic truce" despite that rule almost never being applied to anyone else.

My guess: The olympic committee decided to disqualify them, so the israeli federation tried to pre-empt them by doing it themselves, thus making themselves look honest and upstanding.
