The most preferred method of engaging an enemy is with standoff weapons. These are weapons - such as missiles or guided bombs - that can be launched from aircraft, ships, or vehicular launchers at a target up to several miles away.

While most countries do not possess the capability to do so, there are nations, such as Russia and China, who do have sophisticated air defense systems that can actually detect, get a firing solution, and shoot down standoff weapons while still in flight.

Basically, modern technology has turned war into a series of long-range slap fights.
