Nintendo is discontinuing its Network support for the 3DS and Wii U, like it did for the DS and the Wii. Pretendo is an open source alternative which is restoring online functionalities for several games such as Mario Kart, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, etc.

I haven't tried it yet, and it's not feature complete yet. Still an appreciated project that will save several game communities.
