The US empire is sold as a defender of our way of life and as an extractor of wealth that benefits us (petrodollar, etc.), but we lose freedom domestically because our leaders are going to be reasonably afraid of getting assassinated for decades, and our economic warfare will naturally trigger reprisals like mysterious explosions in refineries or attempts to smuggle crop diseases into the country.

I don't think that's flight for them, it's realising their psychological needs. They badly want to be all-powerful but they also want to think of themselves as good people so they've come up with this kooky story that the only way they can save the world is to make themselves absolute tyrants.

If you look back at history there's periods of centralising technology, where the technological landscape allows for increasingly centralised rule, and decentralising technology.

The 20th century was mostly centralising, with tech like mass communication, air supremacy fighters and aircraft carriers allowing the most centralised powers to rule the rest.

Right now it seems to be going the opposite way, with distributed communication, drones and local manufacturing beginning to take over.

There's every reason to believe the massive untouchable empires of our grandparents day have seen their last generation. When they balkanise there'll be many opportunities.
