@liz_churchill10 Back in the day most people didn't go to college. A middle class family would have really struggled to pay the costs of putting their children through university. You would have had to be learning something substantial that would lead to a high paying job to justify that kind of sacrifice. Going to university meant either your family was rich, or you had a scholarship and/or you were working a part time job to pay for tuition.
