When your child is a little older, you can teach him about our tax system in a way that is easy to grasp. Offer him, say, $10 to mow the lawn. When he has mowed it and asks to be paid, withhold $5 and explain that this is income tax. Give $1 to his younger brother, and tell him that this is “fair”. Also, explain that you need the other $4 yourself to cover the administrative costs of dividing the money. When he cries, tell him he is being “selfish” and “greedy”. Later in life he will thank you.

How does something immoral, when done privately, become moral when it is done collectively? Furthermore, does legality establish morality? Slavery was legal; apartheid is legal; Stalinist, Nazi, and Maoist purges were legal.
Clearly, the fact of legality does not justify these crimes. Legality, alone, cannot be the talisman of moral people.

My wife and I have been friends with a couple for 30 years and they both just retired. They raised up five kids to adulthood- all of them are real gems- and they saved for the day they could spend some time together travelling the world before they got too old.
Now that’s off the table.
