That is a good start. For me, it also helps to categorize the world into what I can change, and what I cannot change, and then stop worrying about what I cannot change.
I find that this method cuts away a lot of crap, and allows me to focus on what is truly important.

Sounds about right. They do not seem to plan; they sort of go with what life presents them, as if they were able to accept destiny better than us.

This is the truth! In psychology, comparison between people who have goals, vs people who do not have goals when it comes to perform a task, resultet in the goal oriented persons performing better.
We do seem to be hardwired to work harder and achieve more, when we have goals.

The difference between us and animals is that we can set conscious goals of our own choice, while they are driven by their biologically coded goals.
Remove an animal from the environment where its goals can be achieved and worked towards, and it generally becomes depressed.
