Who would be king? And who noble? And in such a society, how would you handle if you did not make the cut and ended up as a serf?

I think, by using the term monarchy, maybe you confuse some people who have different associations.

True. This is why capitalism, and free, competitive, markets is the only way to run a long term functioning society.

Remove that, customers, and replace it with socialist drones and "everything is free for everyone" and society soon collapses.

Agreed! The sad fact is, that this is a proven scientific fact.

Yet every single politiciand and nation works against this, with the sky high mountain of national debt, inefficiency, bubbles and crashes that we see.

I might add here that external control is a different beast from having shared and overlapping goals.

I see civilization as a force-multiplier for the individual.

If I write a great symphony, I can have it performed for centuries, where otherwise it would exist only on paper in my office.

I do not think offices are inherited in the West, despite the goofy "dynasties" we have. That I think is a temporary thing.

The advantage of aristocracy is that the leaders come from the people, are dedicated to the success of the organic nation as a whole, and therefore, tend to make long-term decisions however unpopular they are.

Popularity is usually a sickness.

I think democracy is perhaps more stable as libertarian societies, but looking at the world now, it seems as if democracy starts to deteriorate latest at around 200 years or so.

Switzerland is probably one of the few exceptions to this that I know.

I suspect this is very much connected with swiss culture, and a strong sense of decentralization and self-government.

Every state is authoritarian if you end up on the wrong side of the overton window. Look no further than Robinson in the UK or Karl Hedin in sweden.

So no matter the country, sadly you will give up freedoms. The key is to triangulate which freedom to give up in return for what.

I know people who have lived happily enough in singapore as programmers for several years, earned a nest egg, and then moved on when the time came to start a family.

I like discussion. Debate requires judges and rules. It also narrows focus from what is real to what is proven in language at one moment, and this is not fully accurate.

It is partially true, and partial truth like partial intelligence may be the most dangerous form...

I have learned a lot since the AE days through the present from talking to interesting people online.

Sometimes I have to test them. This looks to outsiders like debate. It is me getting clarification on minor points or framing.

I always use this riff, but back when Windows 7 was the standard, people were hoping for something called "MinWin."

Basically, it would be Windows without all the adornments, a no-frills version designed to maximize speed instead of convenient interface.

I think people want the same from government.

So eastern europe is way closer to 19th century europe than western europe is, and that is a positive thing!

When it comes to capitalism and coca cola, I am fine with both, _but_, what many fail to realize is that capitalism is a tool, not a god.

That way I am certain we can bring people back to the realization that markets are a tool and not a life style or a god, and as a bonus, we would get better working markets too, and a healthier population!

The others are survivable.

I think people overcomplicate this however. There are five forms:

1. Monarchy
2. Timarchy
3. Oligarchy
4. Democracy
5. Tyranny

Plato says 3-4 shuttle back and forth; tyranny is rule for the sake of government (state, bureaucracy) and not its people.

The problem with democracy is that once you offer free stuff, government takes over, and you end up at socialism.
