It's disingenuous to say Trump was a life-long Democrat. While I do agree that his policies would align more with a Democrat from the 90s than a modern Republican, I think it's more likely he was just taking the opposite party from the incumbent.

Well, maybe he was a lifelong Democrat, at heart. But that's certainly not what he was registered as.
