Here's why: Insurance companies and physicians are in collusion with hospitals.
Prices go up, they both win.
Hospitals also provide "free/lower cost" care to those without insurance. So what happens?
With insurance: Hospital bills $2500, Insurance pays $350, insurance tells their client they "saved them $2150!"
Without Insurance: Hospital says $2500 in care was provided for free, they write it off their taxable revenue.
I work in this sector. This is the game.
