🗓 On August 26, 1728, the navigator Vitus Bering discovered the strait between Asia and America (this date is considered official). The strait was named after him - the Bering Strait. Vitus Bering was an ethnic Dane, but immediately after graduating from the naval cadet corps he went to the #Russian fleet, and under the name of Ivan Ivanovich Bering rose to the rank of captain of the first rank.
