The branch and copper divining rods actually work. I put a well on my property almost 6 years ago. The old guy who did the actual clearing of the land offered to help me find water. He brought a "live" wishbone-shaped switch and we started looking. We get a very strong response around a huge oak tree. Afterwards, I ordered some copper dousing rods, and double checked the spot. Both rods were twirling around in circles. So, I call the well drillers out. Head guy hops out of the truck, and he's looking for a missing copper dousing rod. I offer him mine, he checks the spot, and then starts triangulating the area to be sure.
"Yup! Right here."

They hit water at 40' and drilled to 120 for storage. Awesome water, too.

@UnCL3 @placebo I worked with a guy who said the copper rods work and when you get to the spot where the well is, you stomp your feet until something else happens with the rods and that's supposed to give you a rough estimate of how far in feet you have to dig down to get to the water. He seemed serious as a heart attack that it works.

I don't know about the stomping part to determine depth, and since there's only one way to find out, I'll pass lol. I think, from my experience, the stronger the signal from the rods, the closer you are to the water. Mine were spinning like helicopter blades over that spot. I found several other locations with water, but this one was so strong it had to be it, and it was.
