@Terry You can't. The Evangelicals are basically correct.
The Old Testament does give a ton of very specific land deeds to literal physical tribes of Israel that were fighting literal physical wars, and it's not like Evangelicals came up with new interpretations really, it's just that the Christians before them all ignored those parts because they didn't know what to make of it (plus there was manuscript fuckery going on with several different parties in the early days)
