Defunctland's video on 'living characters' gives a lot of insight into why Disney can't maintain its character inventory. They're too risk averse with the big names like Mickey Mouse, always worried that the slightest error will damage the brand.

Meanwhile they emasculate every live action male hero, destroying what few properties they have that anyone still gives a shit about.

@judgedread They would ruin Mickey Mouse by trying to make him trans and having him speak in gen z ebonic babble. Mickey and Minnie is too heteronormative so they'd have to make Minnie a lesbo who's shacked up with Daisy Duck while Donald ODs on fent in Pluto's trailer or something.

@nomebullyyou The real issue was that they wanted him to have the right voice. At the time voice synthesis was too crude to do an accurate voice changer, so they went with a soundboard where a puppet master would run Mickey's voice from a remote control room. This worked alright most of the time, but there was a problem. The kids who met talking Mickey would then go up to the many mute Mickeys that wander the park and expect him to speak, but they couldn't.

So they cancelled the whole living character Mickey program.
@judgedread @nomebullyyou Im picturing a kid walking up to one of those mickeys and hearing" what is it kid ? Im allmost on break" in a deep rodney dangerfield voice
@bloggerski Talking in a non-talking costume is a firing offense.
