The U.S. opposes any transit fees, arguing international waterways must remain toll-free. In reality, the Strait of isn’t international waters. Its narrowest part is only 21 miles wide. UNCLOS (the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea) defines territorial waters as 13.8 miles from the coastline (Oman ratified UNCLOS, but and the US haven’t). This means that this 21-mile-wide body of water is deep within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman
