In the demonstration in the link it is important to note that the attachment to the gun is missing after he kicks it but he is still standing in a position where the gun is pointed at him

He would orobably have a better chance defending himself by surrendering because by standing right in front of the gun and kicking it he might startle the person into accidentally shooting him if the person was trying to hold him hostage
