@spectre Okay, to answer your question directly, the US doesn't have to make the old US dollar "seize to exist" merely stop accepting it for taxes, and mandate that economic actors adopt the new system.

If you want to trade your old piece of paper as collectors' items, I guess you could, but wouldn't you rather use something like precious metals which have intrinsic value instead of deteriorating pieces of paper?
