What has been lost is the ability to easily congregate and openly organize. As soon as privately owned digital communication became the norm, we lost most of that. Any sort of rebellion or effective resistance needs that to gain traction.

If you read or watched Dorohedoro, our society has become more like the wizards in that story. Everyone needs a mask now, or they risk losing their job for their actions. They risk being hunted down to where they sleep.
