that is actually something I've always wondered about since I was a kid, watching movies.
You KNOW you are going to be killed anyway, why would you just stand there offering the back of your head? Why not going diving a hell of a fight? There's the slight chance you might even escape, or at least severely damage your captor.

Guess they were broken beyond any repair already.
