I don’t remember the guy’s name but I’m pretty sure he’s in Chabad Lubavitch. Historically, Orthodox Christian countries have proven more vulnerable to the spread of Islam, than Roman Catholic countries. This might be a function of geography; but I blame it more on the loss of a unified Christendom.

The eastern roman empire yes fell to an Islamic conqueror, Caucasian countries have had to deal with them for centuries

@madcuzbad @freepatriot Yeah the Caucasus countries have been astonishingly resilient, culturally - which suggests the importance of mountain folk to me.

mountainous regions are always hard to conquer, not even the romans bothered with many of them.

lot of empires would just say "i own these mountains now" and not bother actually subjugating the people in them

@madcuzbad @freepatriot Yes generally the East fell more readily to Islamic incursions; but Rome remained an anchor in Western Orthodoxy for nine-hundred years, and restored the East — esp. as regards Iconoclasm.
