these robots will create more jobs than they eliminate, uh, somehow

they always do, didn't you hear about the buggy whip guys? no I don't have any other examples than that, it just works out, it's a law of nature

@deprecated_ii The robots themselves will not create more jobs, at least not jobs that will directly translate from working on a port to a job where the skillset can be transferred. People often have to find other jobs for a variety of reasons. If these port workers are worth a shit, they should be able to find work elsewhere.

Does it suck to lose your job? Yes. Is it fair to lose your job to automation? No. Are we better off by always preserving a select few jobs no matter the consequences? No

@houseoftolstoy if you automate away all the jobs "normal" people can do, and never make new jobs for them to do, what happens to the normal people? this question isn't even considered, let alone answered

the future is bright for robot repairmen and engineers of all stripes, but it's not so great for the 90-110 IQ masses who will be stuck with nothing but shitty retail jobs

@deprecated_ii @PurpCat I will not argue in favor of all these people just going to work for Amazon. I should also add that automation does not have to mean all jobs of a low skill need to be outright eliminated. Rather, the automation should be used more as a force multiplier for those that are working on the job. This is not always the case, but it can be. And the best forms of automation remove jobs that no one actually wants rather than ones that are more fulfilling.

@houseoftolstoy @PurpCat I don't have a problem with technology and automation in themselves, I have a problem with how they're actually used

my solution would be to let people spread out and go back to growing their own food and living slower paced lives that they can enjoy without being treated like tax cattle who have to produce revenue for the state or get culled. but that's obviously not on the table in this system
@houseoftolstoy @deprecated_ii
Weneed time to adapt to it all. Right now humanity is like a train going too fast. It's only a matter of time before there's a turn on the track.
