I recall some episodes of I Love Lucy where one or both are being played as comic relief. It might be my small number of episodes watched, but with modern American cartoon comedy it seems as though men have to be fat, dumb, comic relief with smart, fit, wives to help keep them together. Rarely is the female shown in as much negative light as the man.
