They could only do that because they had a deep understanding of human nature, especially White peoples nature, and how to guide it.

I would argue that the local town priest 2000 years ago had a better understanding of human behavior than just about every university trained psychologist today. They had to deal with the best and worst of it over a peoples entire lives, nothing beats that kind of experience.
