In my view, it is mostly likely sheer careerism.

The rest of the board saw a chance to steal the organization from under him since he gave them a legally legitimate reason to do so.

Now they hope to do like the GOP does and rake in donations from the clueless, spend it on almost nothing effective, offend zero corporate sponsors, and pay themselves fat salaries.
