Come on, everyone knew that Russia bombing that hydroelectric dam was inevitable.

The Russian government really wanted to do it while they still held the city of Kherson at least partially. They wanted to use their propaganda engine to turn locals against the Ukrainian government and fuel conscription.

They didn't have a back-up plan for the case where Ukraine already had a lot more control in that area, apparently, so under current circumstances, the ploy is apt to gloriously backfire.

Putin is in trouble here not because he cannot win militarily, but because to do so will start WW3, which condemns him to Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea, and Cuba style quagmire.
