if you bend paper or cardboard, it can stand up.

shape thin material in the right way and it's less likely to fall over. think of an arch in a medieval cathedral but horizontal. the stress is distributed.

and it just makes sense that wide stuff is less likely to fall over. it doesn't need to have an inside. this is just a wide brick wall where they removed some bricks to save on material.
