I never saw a patient come off the vent during the heart of Covid. While working in the ICU at that time I’d try to explain to patients that the vent had bad outcomes. Sadly, the patient would typically get anxiety in the night, while I was off work. The doctors would medicate for the anxiety, and then inevitably intubate, placing the patient on a vent. I’d come back to my next shift and the patients would be dead.
