My basic argument is the old conservative / free market one that the copier and the fax machine killed communism, only applied to theocracy. Theocracy can't exist when the means of heresy are cheap and ubiquitous.

Totalizing ideologues and religious fanatics can no longer eradicate the opposition forever by burning a few libraries full of hand copied manuscripts.

There will be no return to one universal religion with 99% compliance in Europe or its colonies.

It's hard to think of more fanatical movements than National Socialism and Soviet Communism, but both stopped short of demanding complete unity of belief. The National Socialists for the duration and the communists after a short period of anti-religious fervor.

@EvilSandmich Gorbachev himself believed Chernobyl killed communism. Such a ghastly and undeniable failure could not be contained either physically or ideologically. It had nothing to do with jews, the radiation cloud was detected across Europe then satellite images revealed the open core.
