Ship 35's loss of control was due to a failure in the liquid methane tank pressurization diffuser (that uses gas pressure generated by the engines to autogenously pressurize the propellant tanks). This triggered an automatic dump of all main propellants, so that Ship 35 would re-enter with no active propellants.

@Bernard My original post was set off by one point in that article, one that Johnson often repeats, probably because it's central to Socrates/Plato's argument. My polygamy argument is a stark example of something that is great for the personal pleasure and inclusive fitness of a man, but bad for all mankind for the reason you mention: Polygamy leaves some men with no woman and thus no stake in society.

The first next gen Starship booster, Booster 18, will have an integral hot staging interstage. That means that the interstage will not be jettisoned, and will return with the booster upon landing.

@judgedread Before AI it was the great catastrophes and extinction events that our planet periodically goes through. Before mammals were the dinosaurs. Before the dinosaurs the therapsids. And so on. Global glaciations and (real) global warming in repeated cycles.

Nothing says humans are the last. Almost surely we are not.

We could just be a temporary side branch, an experiment, before He abandons us and tries something else again.

Perhaps he keeps our souls and that is all that will endure from the very brief time of our species' existence.

None of that seems unreasonable to me. But it's greatly upset some Christians I've known when I tell them my views. Whatever.

Booster 18 will be the first new gen Starship booster with Raptor 3 engines. Raptor 3 has external regenerative cooling on its outside, as well as the usual internal regen cooling. This eliminates the need for most of the heat shield plating in the aft end of the booster.
