This cannot work against an opponent who operates in a fashion that is best described as 'insane'. For years they have functioned as if they are trapped in a locked room with a rabid chimp that has a loaded AK-47 and have tried to find a way to talk said chimp down or otherwise disarm it without resorting to a gang rush.

The chimp has now fired several rounds and wounded one of the other players. We are in uncharted territory.

Reading the specs I gotta say Nimitz class carriers are very thinly armed. Obviously the destroyers and aircraft are supposed to provide the lion's share, but I wouldn't want to be on that floating anvil right now.

@brokenshakles I got my info from The Day the Universe Changed, which noted that the need for accurate navigation and precision artillery forced all sides to give in to the scientific world picture.

@judgedread It's rather difficult to arm an Aircraft carrier with anything other than it's aircraft, considering it's need for the Flat Top. The Nimitz class took this to it's logical conclusion, and just specialized in aircraft entirely.

This worked fine in a world without hypersonic missiles, in the same way dreadnoughts worked fine in a world without aircraft carriers.
