It gets worse because the EU doesn't really have troops to fight Russia with.
Whatever you may think about Russia (and believe me, I have very personal reasons for not liking them), the reality is that Putin has managed to hold a 70+% approval rating and convince Russians that he represents them. As a result, he has been able to lean on the Russian population for conscripts.
European leaders on the other hand are lucky to have a 30% approval. People will comment to the moon and back over what they did wrong, but REALLY when you boil it all down, THE THING is the economy. They imported cheap labor to drive down wages.
When you do that, finance ministers love it, because they can borrow and print more money without causing immediate inflation. Retirees love it because you can avoid financial austerity and they can live well. The stock market loves it because all of that newly printed money drives up stocks.
BUT, young men can't make enough money to buy a house and start a family.
When you can't enable your citizens to live well, they resent you. Your country becomes no longer a Nation, but an Economic Zone, and nobody wants to fight for an Economic Zone. If you try to make them fight, they will fight YOU, at home, and with supplies and intel coming from Russia.
So the whole situation is Weak Men made Hard Times, and now reality's setting in and everybody wants it to be something that it's not.
