Here's a theory on deep state opposition to attacking Iran.

If the US attacks Iran in earnest there's a good chance Iran will strike back hard, sinking at least one carrier, possible all of them in range.

This will not give Iran victory, but it will fatally wound US credibility. 'THEY CAN DIE!'

It will end the gunboat diplomacy era once and for all.

Without that option US power is down to ICBMs, fighter jets (within range of airbases), cruise missiles and a demoralized army that doesn't want to fight.
