People back then died in their 40s and many of their children died before their 9th birthdays and their medicine and sanitation were shit and their day to day levels of general pain and discomfort were completely unbearable by 21st century standards but boy oh boy they went to church every Sunday!

In any event, we're not going back to medieval times. In the event of a breakdown we will have some new low technology social structure that incorporates modern philosophical ideas - anti-Christian, atheistic, agnostic, new age, the usual Oprah mishmash of confused American nonsense - and the contingent facts of history. Some warlords will be little more than gangsters, others cult leaders, most military veterans with practical concerns paramount.
